It's been years now but I remember how I use to play around
On a used red, white and blue guitar that was handed down
From my Daddy to my brother and me

Every evening a microphone and me still out here dreaming
Some folks call me a fool for believing
That I'll someday catch the break I really need

You can blame my perseverance on my father
I guess the fruit don't fall far from the tree
I know in my heart out there somewhere
There's a piece of the pie for me

If I ever slow down and take a break from the dreams I'm been chasing around
I'm gonna go back to my hometown to lick my wounds and catch my breath
But right now I ain't done dreaming yet

You can blame my perseverance on my father
I guess the fruit don't fall far from the tree
I know in my heart out there somewhere
There's a piece of the pie for me
